A Fruitful Day at the Methodist Apple Chapel!

It was a wonderful day in the village as 24 enthusiastic residents came together at the Methodist Chapel to produce approximately 40 litres of apple juice. Every apple used was sourced from within the village, making the event a true celebration of local community and produce.

The day began with setting up the equipment, an effort made all the more challenging by persistent rain. Fortunately, a sturdy gazebo provided much-needed shelter, with two tables positioned underneath to house the essential tools. The basic scratter and press were set up in one corner, meticulously cleaned, greased, and secured on its stand. Chopping boards and knives were neatly arranged on the tables, alongside Mary’s trusty net curtain for straining, as well as funnels, jugs, and washing-up bowls for collecting the juice.

Inside the chapel, away from the relentless downpour, delicious cakes made by villagers and hot drinks were on offer. Outside, chopping and chatting began despite the dripping from the heavens above.

Then bowls full of cleaned, chopped apples were chucked into the scratter and the green handle turned to chew up the apples to make a pulp. Strong muscles were flexed to rotate the handle round and round, and create the substrate for pressing. The pulp was then pressed and squeezed and out came the glorious golden apple juice.

It was then strained and bottled, after a little citric acid was added for clarification.

A wonderful morning was had by all, and thanks go to all the many helpers who contributed to making Allerston’s very own apple juice!
