Earth Day

Following the success of the AWE coffee morning, cake sale and raffle at the Methodist Chapel on 9th March, which was attended by members of Ryedale Environmental Group and Pickering Environmental Group (PEG), PEG very kindly invited AWE to provide the refreshments at the Wildlife Fair they were organising at The Memorial Hall in Pickering to celebrate Earth Day on Saturday 20 th April.
Earth Day is an annual celebration that honours the achievements of the environmental conservation movement and raises awareness about environmental issues. It was started more than 50 years ago in the USA because there were no mechanisms in place to protect our environment. Today approximately 5,000 groups and 184 countries participate in Earth Day resulting in many laws being passed to protect the planet.
Pickering’s Earth Day focussed on how we can encourage wildlife and highlighted the “Blue Heart Campaign” that encourages Councils and the public to re-wild their green spaces and the placing of a blue heart indicates why the grass and flowers are growing longer there
.
Activities were run in Beck Isle Museum, the Memorial Hall, the Library and Hungate Centre. Outside the Memorial Hall, Rogers Nursery provided trees and plants while inside were stalls representing our amazing wildlife with tips on how to help these creatures. Visitors were invited to sign up to No Mow May and children were given Blue Hearts and could pass across to Beck Isle to decorate them. They were also offered wildflower seeds to take home. Beck Isle provided a “Go Wild” section including creating a Caterpillar, wildlife stories, and how to become a “Bug Explorer”. “Waste not want not” at the Hungate Centre focussed on becoming eco-friendly and self-sufficient, while the Library featured a Wildlife Photography exhibition.
Once again, the bakers of Allerston, with the support of members of PEG, excelled themselves with the provision of some scrumptious cakes, including gluten free and vegan offerings, and the sale of lots of cake, and a few drinks raised the amazing sum of £420 for AWE.
Earth Day’s remit is to raise awareness of ALL environmental issues and Pickering successfully encouraged us to come together and take action for a healthier planet, protecting natural resources for future generations. Small actions have a cascading effect, and the funds AWE raised from the sale of refreshments in the Memorial Hall will be used to support our efforts to improve wildlife in Allerston and the surrounding area.
