On Tuesday 18th February 2025, we were delighted to welcome Richard Baines of Yorkshire Coast Nature for an insightful talk on the conservation of turtle doves, titled Turtle Doves from North Yorkshire to Senegal.

Richard, who works on the North Yorkshire Turtle Dove Project, shared his extensive knowledge about this iconic yet endangered bird. The North York Moors National Park is home to the only significant breeding population of turtle doves in northern England, making local conservation efforts crucial to their survival.

Attendees gained a deeper understanding of the turtle dove’s incredible migratory journey, the challenges they face due to habitat loss and climate change, and the vital conservation work being carried out to protect them. Richard also provided practical advice on how individuals and communities can contribute to safeguarding this species.

The talk was well received, sparking engaging discussions and inspiring many to take action for turtle dove conservation. Of course, there were plenty of cakes and biscuits on offer alongside a hot drink. Altogether we raised £168 for the North Yorkshire Turtle Dove Project. A big thank you to Richard Baines and everyone who attended and donated —we appreciate your support and enthusiasm!
