Last Tuesday, we had the great fortune to spend a peaceful summer evening exploring a beautiful valley near Newton on Rawcliffe, guided by the wonderfully knowledgeable Ryedale naturalist and botanist, Gill Smith.
Gill’s passion for the natural world is infectious. As we wandered along the short valley trail, she helped us discover the fascinating variety of plants growing all around us. With her guidance, we were able to identify a rich mix of flora - bedstraws, orchids, vetches, and grasses, along with members of the daisy family, each with their own story and ecological significance.
Gill also introduced us to the Chimney Sweep Moth, a busy little creature flitting through the grasses, and helped us tune into the surrounding woodland birdsong: an ever-present soundtrack that added to the magic of the evening.
Bathed in hazy evening sunshine, the valley offered a calm, welcoming atmosphere that felt almost timeless. It was a truly special experience - one of those rare moments where learning, nature, and community come together in perfect harmony.
We are so very grateful to Gill for sharing her time, knowledge, and enthusiasm with us.
